Welcome!

Research in the Mental Health, Affective Science, and Technology (MAST) laboratory is broadly focused on understanding the relationships between emotion and mental health. We use a variety of methods to answer research questions including qualitative and mixed methods approaches, experiments, experience sampling, and interventions.
Topics of interest in the laboratory include:
  • Emotion and Mental Health: Investigating the role of emotional processes in the development, maintenance, and treatment of mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression, alcohol, and substance use disorders.
  • Emotion Regulation and Mental Health: Examining how various emotion regulation strategies (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression) contribute to emotion dysregulation across different mental disorders and serve as a transdiagnostic treatment target. Understanding the mechanisms behind heightened emotion regulation difficulties in marginalized groups (e.g., LGBTQ2SIA+).
  • Psychological Interventions Targeting Emotional Functioning: Developing and evaluating interventions (e.g., mindfulness-based interventions, emotion-focused therapies) to improve emotion regulation skills and alleviate mental health symptoms, especially dialectical behavior therapy. Exploring the use of technology (e.g., experience sampling, apps, mobile sensing) to support assessment and intervention.
  • Technology and Mental Health: Investigating the impact of social media (e.g., Instagram, TikTok) and other tech-based service use (e.g., Netflix) on mental health and related attitudes.
We also work closely with groups in the community, such as QTMMA, Windsor Family Health Team, and Grandi and Associates to increase psychological services in Windsor-Essex.

The lab aims to produce high-quality, reproducible research that is committed to Open Science principles and integrates affective and clinical science. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment and increasing the representation of historically underrepresented individuals in science.
